The Time is Now course with Southway Housing - Adanna's story

Adanna, a resident from our local community, had previously worked as a Teacher in Nigeria, but since moving to the UK in 2019 had only worked in volunteer roles alongside bringing up her young children.

Having been out of paid employment for 3 years, she attended and successfully completed the 5-week The Time is Now course at Southway Housing. Following this, she continued receiving employability support from Southway, working on CV development, interview preparation and job searching. This helped her to increase her confidence and recognise her existing employability skills.

Through one of Southway's training partners, she was referred to the NHS-linked Step into Care programme run by WEA. This provided a route into social care, which was an area she had always wanted to work in but had little experience of. She was accepted on the course. Whilst studying, she was able to gain the tools she needed to pursue a career in Care, and once this was successfully completed, she moved into a job placement with a residential care organisation where she has now secured permanent employment.

It was great to see each step of her journey contribute to helping her find sustainable employment in an industry that she has a huge passion for.

About The Time Is Now

The Time is Now is Southway’s new employment support course, aimed at helping peolpe to plan their goals, build them confidence and leave them better equipped to take the next steps towards their dream career.

Created at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, The Time is Now aims to make the best of this uncertain time by providing the time and space for self-reflection. The five-week course actively encourages participants to fully realise their aspirations and take positive action towards their career goals.

Since its launch in May 2020, over 40 people have now completed The Time is Now, and a number of partner organisations, including Standguide, Be Well, Enterprising You and Proper Job Theatre Company, have joined the sessions to advise on confidence-building, training opportunities and more.

“I really appreciated The Time is Now. The course is engaging and challenging. I really enjoyed taking action and interaction with others. This really supported my mental health during lockdown. I would totally recommend this course to others.”
