Background
Jerome, a 23-year-old from Manchester, first heard about the Support to Succeed programme in March 2024 through his Employment and Skills Mentor at One Manchester. At the time, he felt unsure about his career goals and struggled with anxiety, which had impacted his ability to thrive in previous work placements. He was eager to move forward but needed guidance on how to progress.
Challenges
Before joining Support to Succeed, Jerome had no paid employment history, despite having attempted two work placements. These placements were in fast-paced environments with team dynamics that heightened his anxiety, leading him to leave both roles. To address his anxiety and improve his well-being, Jerome began working with 42nd Street, an organisation that provides mental health support for young people.
Support and Progress
With the help of his Key Worker from the Support to Succeed programme, Jerome received tailored, one-on-one support. Together, they identified the types of jobs that wouldn’t suit him and explored roles that aligned with his interests. This process helped Jerome build motivation and confidence, giving him a clearer idea of his career path.
On April 18th, Jerome attended a recruitment event for the National Citizenship Service (NCS), a 9-month paid work placement programme for 18-24-year-olds. His Key Worker accompanied him to the event, where Jerome found three roles that sparked his interest.
Application and Interview Preparation
With support from his Key Worker, Jerome began the application process. He applied for all three roles and was invited to attend two interviews. Jerome and his Key Worker worked together to prepare for these interviews, practising using the STAR method to help him structure his answers and highlight his skills and qualities.
Success and New Role
Thanks to his hard work and preparation, Jerome performed well in both interviews and was offered a full-time position as a Community Connector with One Manchester. In this role, he engages with local organisations and community groups, helps develop new partnerships, and works directly with customers to understand how grant funding and social investment benefit different communities.
Results
Now six weeks into his new role, Jerome is thriving. He enjoys being part of a supportive team and learning about the various communities and organisations across Manchester. His confidence has grown significantly, and he continues to challenge himself by stepping outside of his comfort zone. Jerome’s journey with Support to Succeed has not only helped him secure employment but also empowered him to achieve personal and professional growth.
Conclusion Jerome’s experience with Support to Succeed highlights the importance of personalised support and mentorship. Through this programme, Jerome was able to overcome his anxiety, build confidence, and find a role that truly suits him. His journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, the ri
