Manchester Athena (Athena) is a company limited by guarantee which was set up to deliver training, employment and initiatives across Greater Manchester and the north west of England in response the Government public sector reforms.
It formed in 2013 and is a strategic partnership between housing associations who share a goal of using innovation and enterprise to help transform people’s lives.
Athena members are rooted deep within the Greater Manchester city region where devolution offers a new and exciting opportunity to transfer powers from central government to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).
Manchester Athena also works with the Greater Manchester Housing Providers group (GMHP) to support continued investment in communities and homes in the region.
Why is the partnership needed?
A recent Government survey shows communities across Greater Manchester are among some of the most deprived in the country, particularly in terms of income, employment and health.
By combining the strengths of the housing sector and other organisations, Manchester Athena strives to deliver better services that meet the needs of different people across the region.
Our impact across Greater Manchester
With our partners we:
- Own 150,000 social homes
- Have a collective spending power of £750m+
- Employ 6000+ people, most of whom are Greater Manchester residents
Although Athena’s work is commercially driven, people are at the heart of everything is does and any surplus or profits are reinvested into projects that support community regeneration and investment in Greater Manchester.
This ethos and influence across the region makes Athena a socially aware, ethical and not-for-profit alternative to conventional ‘prime and sub-contractor’ commissioning models.
It also provides a wide range of in-house expertise across skills and employment, health and wellbeing and financial and digital inclusion.
